ACFAS Endorses JCAHO's Universal Protocol on Wrong Site Surgery

On December 2, 2003, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) announced a new Universal Protocol to eliminate wrong site, wrong procedure and wrong patient surgeries.

ACFAS, along with over 40 other surgical-oriented organizations, is a signatory to this nationwide effort. Compliance with the Universal Protocol by all JCAHO accredited hospitals, ambulatory care surgery centers, and office-based surgery programs will be required beginning July 1, 2004.

"ACFAS is pleased to partner in this major campaign. These universal procedures will greatly improve patient safety and will eliminate preventable wrong surgery tragedies," said Bruce R. Werber, ACFAS Past-President.
