Foot & Ankle Surgical Complications Seminar

Saturday, October 5, 2019
7am - 5pm

This not-to-be-missed foot & ankle surgical complications seminar features presentations on forefoot and rearfoot procedures with a special focus on tips and pearls. You'll also spend the afternoon hearing from Tri-State Region residents from various programs presenting complication case studies.

Speakers will make 20-minute presentations, and include ACFAS Board members, ACFAS Tri-State Region Officers, residency directors, fellowship directors and other faculty from academic institutions.

Audience discussion and participation is highly encouraged, so please feel free to bring your own cases for discussion.

ACFAS Tri-State Region Meeting Outcomes

ACFAS Membership Meeting - Tri-State Region: (Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania)

The Tri-State Region held a membership meeting on Friday, February 15 during ACFAS 2019 in New Orleans. More than 33 members attended the event. Several topics were discussed:

  • Holding a Complications course in the Region 
  • Participating in the ACFAS Coming to You program.

The Region meeting raffle prize of a $100 Amazon gift card winner was Heidi Godoy, DPM, AACFAS, a Post Graduate Fellow member from Wayne, NJ.

ACFAS Tri-State Region Supports Student Scholar to the Annual Scientific Conference

ACFAS Region Scholars are funded by the ACFAS Region Presidents Council, specifically their home Regions, and are usually the president-elect of their local ACFAS Student Club. Their local Regions honor them as future leaders of the profession. The 2019 ACFAS Region Scholar from the Tri-State Region is Samuel Straus from Temple University.

ACFAS Tri-State Region Funds Resident Poster Research at ACFAS 2019 in New Orleans

In an effort to support research activities, the Tri-State Region provided funding to the following residents as poster presenters at the 2019 Annual Scientific Conference in New Orleans:

The Region also supported the following resident and post graduate fellow manuscript presenters:

  • Effect of the 1st Tarsometatarsal (Modified Lapidus) Arthrodesis on Hindfoot Alignment
    Resident Presenter: Travis M. Johnson, DPM, Western Pennsylvania Hospital
  • Early Weightbearing Following Foot and Ankle Surgery:  A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
    Resident Presenter: Christopher J. Betrus, DPM, West Penn Hospital
  • Allograft Bone as an Alternative to Autograft in Foot and Ankle Arthrodesis and Nonunion Repair
    Post Graduate Fellow Presenter: Ruth R. Moen, DPM, AACFAS, Foot and Ankle Fellowship of the Orthopedic Institute of Central New Jersey

Congratulations to these resident and post graduate fellow poster and manuscript authors on their research efforts.

Region Goals for Second Half of 2019

  • Tri-State Region to host Foot and Ankle Complications Seminar at Temple on October 5.
  • Tri-State Region preparation to support Annual Scientific Conference posters and manuscripts.
  • Participation at the Region Presidents Council meeting in October (Chicago).


A portion of ACFAS member dues is allocated for Region activities. Regions use these funds to further the goals of ACFAS at the state and local level: to promote the superior care of foot and ankle surgical patients through education, research and promotion of the highest professional standards. Regions also work on outreach to students and residents, helping to give them a successful start in their careers as foot and ankle surgeons.

Regions are affiliate organizations of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. They are granted a charter and license to use the ACFAS name and logo, are mandated by their own articles of incorporation and bylaws and remain separate entities from the parent organization.
