LAS VEGAS – February 25, 2010--Soon the feet of homeless women and children in Las Vegas will be enjoying the comfort of new socks, thanks to the second annual sock drive organized by surgeons attending the 68th Annual Scientific Conference of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) this week. Over 1200 socks were collected and presented to The Shade Tree, a Las Vegas shelter for homeless and abused women, children and their pets.

Sponsored by the Consumer Education Committee of ACFAS and Dox Podiatry, a medical software firm, the donation program is designed to give back to the conference host communities. “As an a association dedicated to improving people’s health and wellness through their feet, we are proud to be able to provide the less fortunate people of Las Vegas with the solace of new socks,” said Amber Shane, DPM, FACFAS, chairman of the ACFAS Consumer Education Committee. “It is our hope that the socks will be the first step in improved foot health for those in need,” she added.

“We are very pleased to be accepting such a generous and important donation for our residents,” says Marlene Richter, executive director of The Shade Tree. “We rely on the generosity of others to help our residents and unfortunately, like many other service organizations, we are experiencing a drop in vital donations such as footwear due to the recent economy.”
