Dr. Thomas Roukis Installed as President of National Surgical Society

CHICAGO-February 28, 2014 - Thomas S. Roukis, DPM, PhD, FACFAS, is now the 63rd president of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS), a national association of over 7,000 foot and ankle surgeons. Dr. Roukis was installed as president at the ACFAS' 72nd Annual Scientific Conference in Orlando, Florida.

The ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference, the largest educational meeting for foot and ankle surgeons in the U.S., draws attendees from around the world to discuss the most current techniques and technology for treatment of deformities, diseases and injuries of the foot and ankle.

"I am honored to continue to serve the members of this premier organization and to represent the professional and educational interests of my fellow foot and ankle surgeons as president," Roukis, said. "ACFAS is dedicated to the advancement of our profession and making a difference for the specialty of foot and ankle surgery and I am passionate about being a part of such an organization."

Dr. Roukis practices at Gundersen Health System in the Department of Orthopaedics, Podiatry and Sports Medicine in La Crosse, Wisconsin, where he directs podiatric surgery resident education. Dr. Roukis is board certified in both foot surgery and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.

Dr. Roukis earned his podiatric medical degree from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, California. He followed with a three-year podiatric surgical residency at Gundersen Health System; an AO International Trauma Fellowship in Germany; an ACFAS Divison-14 European Fellowship in Germany and Switzerland; and a one-year Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Research and Surgery Fellowship at the Weil Foot and Ankle Institute in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Dr. Roukis has received numerous awards and scholarships related to research and clinical expertise in foot and ankle surgery and served as principal or co-investigator on 19 clinical trials and scientific studies. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed scientific articles, nine textbook chapters, and given more than 315 oral and poster presentations nationally and internationally.
