The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) is saddened to share the passing of Past President Alan H. Shaw, DPM, FACFAS, who led the College in 1992 during a pivotal moment in the College’s history.
Dr. Shaw’s presidency marked the year the College officially added “Ankle” to its name, reflecting the expanding scope of podiatric surgical practice. He championed deeper involvement in governmental affairs at the onset of national health care reform, revitalized the College’s Divisions through the creation of the House of Councilors, and oversaw the completion of the first four Preferred Practice Guidelines and laid the foundation for today’s Clinical Consensus and Position Statements. Under his leadership, ACFAS launched its first ankle arthroscopy course, planned the inaugural World Congress with European orthopedic surgeons, and published the final edition of Complications in Foot and Ankle Surgery. As Dr. Shaw often emphasized in his reports and speeches, it was the dedication of “hundreds of members and staff” that made these achievements possible.
Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Dr. Shaw will be remembered for his humor and love of fly-fishing, which is a passion he often shared with his family and friends. In his own words, he was committed to “achieving a level of influence and excellence never before thought possible” for the College, and his leadership helped make that vision a reality.
ACFAS extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Shaw’s family, friends, and colleagues. His contributions continue to shape our profession and inspire future generations of foot and ankle surgeons.
