Program Summary/Training Goals:
- The purpose of this fellowship is to provide a post graduate podiatric surgeon with advanced training in common and complex foot, ankle, reconstructive and trauma surgical procedures, as well as becoming immersed in a robust practice management clinical setting, billing and marketing themselves to become proficient in all facets of podiatric medicine so that upon completion they will leave the program more than prepared for practice in any environment.
- There will be added emphasis on integrating evidence-based medicine and research into clinical and surgical treatment. A fellow will perform research of interest consistent with the aforementioned areas of concentration
- A fellow will “hands on “exposure to patient care including pre-operative, intra-operative and post- operative management of surgical patients.
- Anticipated Schedule:
- Clinic- 2 to 3 days a week based on the week of the month. A fellow will have his/ her own clinic schedule as well as shadow and assist director/ faculty with working up patients and providing care for all foot and ankle pathology. Fellow will not practice unsupervised and will be in the clinic with a faculty member. Fellows will have to start 10-15 independent patients per day with expansion when comfort and efficiency improve. Total clinical exposures between independent clinic and shadowing can be expected to be approximately 40-50 patient exposures a day.
- Clinics will begin seeing patients at 0800. Last patient to be scheduled at 1625.
- Surgical Cases- Expect to be in the OR 2-3 days a week based on the week of the month.
- Operative responsibilities and involvement of the fellow will be assessed based on skill set, comfort and overall knowledge.
- It is anticipated that before completion of fellowship requirements that skill set and comfort within the operating room setting will allow the fellow to be the surgeon of record for procedures worked up through their clinic.
- There is an anticipated surgical volume exposure of 40 cases per month.
- Hours in the OR are variable and depending on case volume on any given day and number of available operating rooms at a facility for any given operating room day.
- Clinic- 2 to 3 days a week based on the week of the month. A fellow will have his/ her own clinic schedule as well as shadow and assist director/ faculty with working up patients and providing care for all foot and ankle pathology. Fellow will not practice unsupervised and will be in the clinic with a faculty member. Fellows will have to start 10-15 independent patients per day with expansion when comfort and efficiency improve. Total clinical exposures between independent clinic and shadowing can be expected to be approximately 40-50 patient exposures a day.
- Duty Hours will not exceed ACFAS guidelines.
- The fellow will obtain privileges to provide medical care at UPMC and Penn State Facilities, as well as Slate Hill Surgical Center
- Fellow will be provided one day a month to work on research data collection to fulfill the requirement of one article submission to a peer reviewed journal per year. Fellowship faculty will assist with research data collection and submissions. Costs for submission to peer reviewed journals will be covered by the practice and not the responsibility of the fellow. At the time of monthly evaluations, research updates will be discussed as well to ensure fellow is on track for research submission.
