Program Summary / Training Goals:

Founded in 2009, our fellowship is one of the most all-encompassing programs in foot & ankle medicine and surgery.
  • The purpose of our foot and ankle fellowship is to provide a well-rounded, intense training program within Palo Alto Medical Foundation, part of Sutter Health, centered in the heart of Silicon Valley, California and provide fellows with the resources and education to become leaders in the field of foot and ankle surgery.
  • The fellowship experience is highly autonomous with exposure to all aspects of both clinical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. The fellowship has an emphasis on complex pathology with a focus on acute trauma, arthroscopy, sports medicine, revision surgery, pediatric deformity and Ponseti methods, Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) techniques, rearfoot and ankle reconstruction including primary and revision total ankle replacement as well as complex foot pathology.
  • Fellows have the unique opportunity to work closely with the local professional women's soccer team, Bay Area FC and Dr. Richard Gayle, MD, our sports medicine specialist for the team.  Specific training is provided in sports medicine, concussion protocols, sideline injury management and fellows are given the opportunity to participate as a part of the sideline crew at MLS games in San Jose, CA.
  • Position requires a motivated, independent and skilled surgeon who is comfortable managing acute foot and ankle trauma.
  • Fellows must have surgical experience and skills expected from a three-year surgical training program.
  • Fellows are strongly encouraged to achieve Board Qualification and ACFAS membership.
  • Fellows will have opportunities to speak locally and nationally.
  • Fellows will accrue primary cases for surgical boards (averaging between 50-70 per fellow per year).
  • Our fellowship truly touches on every aspect of foot and ankle care allowing our fellows to graduate having essentially completed a comprehensive first year in practice.
