Research Requirements:
- The fellow will be required to participate in research endeavors and will be expected to submit original research to a peer reviewed journal for publication prior to graduation. This will include but is not limited to submission and presentation for the ACFAS Annual Scientific Conference (ASC).
- The fellowship will provide support for the research endeavors including IRB, statistician, and journal access.
Program Summary/Training Goals:
- The Southern California Advanced Reconstructive Fellowship (SCARF) aims to train the next generation of foot and ankle surgeons through high-volume surgical exposure, structured mentorship, and progressive academic responsibility.
- The primary goal is to prepare the fellow to enter practice with confidence in complex reconstruction, trauma care, sports medicine, and limb preservation.
- The fellow will participate in a broad operative experience across hospital, surgery center, and private practice settings. Working closely with a surgically diverse faculty the fellow will gain exposure to advanced reconstructive techniques, Charcot and deformity correction, total ankle arthroplasty, hindfoot and midfoot fusion procedures, tendon and ligament reconstruction, and minimally invasive approaches. Emphasis is placed on developing refined surgical technique, sound judgment, and consistent perioperative decision-making.
- Longitudinal patient care is a core component, allowing the fellow to manage cases from initial evaluation through definitive treatment and recovery. Additional goals include strengthening diagnostic efficiency, clinic workflow, and evidence-based treatment pathways.
- Academic development is central to the program. The fellow will participate in research, quality-improvement initiatives, and monthly academic sessions focused on measurable skills such as billing, postoperative management, surgical planning, and reconstructive principles. Professionalism, leadership, communication, and teaching skills are reinforced throughout the year, along with preparation for lifelong engagement with ACFAS.
- Upon completion, the fellow will be fully prepared to succeed in a demanding surgical practice and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of foot and ankle surgery.
