Program Summary/Training Goals:

  • This fellowship program will be a one-year intensive program based on complex deformity correction and limb salvage techniques.
  • The program is fully sponsored and endorsed by the Heersink School of Medicine Department of Surgery and UAB Medicine.
  • The fellow will learn alongside over 1,000 other medical trainees across greater than 90 training programs at Alabama’s largest and best tertiary academic medical facility.
  • Fellows can expect complex lower extremity pathologies not seen elsewhere. These include but are not limited to Charcot foot and ankle deformities, post traumatic deformities, infectious and ischemic pathologies, advanced wound care modalities including flap coverage options, and complex burn patients.
  • The fellow will also gain experience in a small weekly clinic of their own and participate in taking call responsibilities with the faculty, gaining valuable experience working in a large hospital-based practice and a smaller “office” style setting.
  • Being the only podiatric training program at this facility and in the UAB system will allow us to tailor the fellow’s curriculum towards their own individual interests.
  • Weekly or monthly rotations are available with specialties the fellow may not have experienced during their residency training or not on this scale. This exposure may create more comfort moving forward. These areas include vascular surgery, infectious disease, burn, neurology and more.
  • Weekly academic conferences will take place for the fellow with discussion of cases being completed by the faculty, postoperative case review, academic topics and research proposals with updates.
  • Monthly journal clubs and labs will be planned and tailored toward the fellow’s interests.
