2024 RESIDENTS DAY IS SOLD OUT

This year’s Resident’s Day highlights some of the hot topics circulating amongst today’s future foot and ankle surgeons.  Marking its third year since its inception, the workshop will feature topics such as strategies to set you on the path to financial independence. Also, you’ll learn how to effectively promote yourself in your medical community using conventional methods and newer social media platforms while also protecting yourself from possible legal ramifications. Residents Day will continue with several sessions focusing on post-residency life such as picking the right practice setting and what to expect your first year out in practice. And finally, join us to learn how you can become a future leader in the field and foster relationships that will last you throughout your career.

If that’s not enough, finish the day with a joint lunch with both Residency Directors and Fellowship Directors: Residents Day and Residency Directors Forum will combine for a networking lunch and three general sessions. We’ll start with plans to take on the student recruitment crisis; continue with a head-to-head PRR logging quiz against program directors; and hear from the experts on the legal aspect of residency programs. Finally, you’ll have the option to stick around for a final session on generational differences and their impact on incoming residents.

RD1: Develop Your Own Compass: Financial Planning

Financial planning can be an arduous process and no one scenario works for everyone. Negotiating various insurance policies such as disability, life, and malpractice can seem overwhelming but are crucial in setting up financial security. Paying off student loans and the various options on how to navigate that can weigh heavily on your journey to financial freedom. This session will help you design your own financial compass and get you started on your journey to financial success.

This presentation will cover basic understanding of best practices for marketing at both the local and national level.  The speaker(s) will discuss keys to successful virtual advertisement and patient marketing.  You will learn how to optimize search engines to make your practice to stand out.  We will explore which platform can give you the best exposure for your buck.  We will focus on the do’s and don’ts of social medial and things to avoid to reduce your medical and legal liabilities.

  1. Learn how to promote yourself in your medical community.
  2. Learn how to increase your referral base.
  3. Learn how to effectively use social media for professional promotion.
  4. Learn how to optimize the search engine and social media platform to better stand out.

Connecting and building relationships with current leaders and like-minded comrades in our field plays a major role in nurturing the future leaders of our profession. Although it is sometimes challenging to know where to start in your leadership journey and how to facilitate building these relationships, we are bringing together a panel of physicians to help provide guidance for initiating your leadership chapter.

The field of medicine comes with the luxury of various practice settings. But how do you choose? This session will elaborate on the benefits of the available practice options extending from a hospital/university setting to private, orthopedic, and multispecialty groups to military hospitals and the VA. There are plenty of fish in the sea and picking the right one can lead to job satisfaction.

Learning Objectives – attendees will:

  1. Learn about the various practice settings available to podiatrists.
  2. Understand the pros and cons of each practice setting. 
  3. Learn about the financial structure and benefits typically offered by the various settings.

RD5: First Year Post-Residency – Now What? Fair Winds and Following Seas

You completed residency and/or fellowship and you have a new job lined up. You finish orientation and you hit the ground running seeing patients. You schedule your first surgery and realize things do not run the same way as they did at your previous hospital. Your first-year post-residency or post-fellowship naturally comes with various hurdles that affect efficiency. This session will highlight some of the unexpected obstacles newly graduated physicians experience at a new facility. Understanding these obstacles will save you time in both the operating room and clinic and help you keep your head above water.

Learning Objectives – attendees will:

  1. Hear common hurdles experienced when starting at a new hospital or facility. 
  2. Learn how to be more efficient in clinic when first starting out.
  3. Understand how to prevent scenarios that affect efficiency in the operating room.
  4. Learn how to get the equipment you want for surgery. 
  5. Understand the logistics of the operating room.

The 2024 Residency Directors Forum agenda was developed based on feedback received from previous Forums post-event surveys.  This year’s Forum includes several panel discussions with the aim to provide a venue to exchange knowledge and wisdom among our residency directors.  The Forum will focus on faculty development and will cover topics such as identifying and managing current challenges in education, exploring tips and techniques to enhance resident teaching, and learning more about legal aspect of administrating a residency program.  The 2024 Forum will also have a mock showcase of a Residency Review Committee's (RRC’s) program approval process.  Set sail and join us for this educational voyage.

GS1: Student Recruitment Crisis: A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats

It is well recognized by everyone that the reduction in number of applicants to the podiatry schools can have major impact in future of everyone in the profession. The Colleges, residency programs, fellowship programs, and even more important the community is significantly affected by the current student recruitment crisis. The goal of this session is to discuss current initiatives and how one can get involved in promoting podiatry and to support the podiatric colleges in becoming a united front.  In this session, we will share what your school Deans and AACPM are doing to promote "Feet on the Street" campaign.  We will also hear from APMA on how you can help promote student recruitment in your area.  ACFAS and ABFAS are joining the forces to increase awareness of our profession.   We need your feedback and engagement to help reduce the ripple effect of our current student attrition crisis.

Learning Objectives – attendees will:

  1. Get familiarized with current steps taken by various organizations in promoting student recruitment.
  2. Learn what each program or individual can do to support or promote current efforts in student recruitment.
  3. Share what other actions needed to achieve a successful/sustainable student recruitment campaign.
  4. Provide feedback on how we can improve quality as well as quantity of student applicants to podiatry schools.

GS2: PRR Logging Quiz: Keep Your Program Ship-Shape

Appropriate logging of procedures is essential to our residents. CPME approves a
residency certificate based on a resident meeting MAVs in surgical and non-surgical experiences.
Furthermore, ABFAS grants a Board Qualification certificate based on residents meeting MAV in predefined surgical categories. To be Board Certified, surgical logging becomes an important arm of the case review. In this presentation, you will hear from a representative from PRR, RRC and ABFAS on
challenges they have encountered with surgical logging. In addition, we will have a competition
between residents and program directors on their knowledge of appropriate logging.

Learning Objectives - attendees will:

  1. Review common mistakes made by residents when logging cases.
  2. Understand the detail of information required when logging.
  3. Learn the implications of improper logging to both the resident and residency program.
  4. Learn any future anticipated changes to the logging process.

GS3: The Legal Aspect of Residency Programs: Surfing the Waves

Mistakes can happen, tempers can flare, and in some cases, residents or program directors can sometimes find themselves on the wrong side of the table. Sometimes, litigations are initiated against residency programs and or program directors/faculties for issues such as behavioral misconduct, wrongful termination, discrimination, hostile work environment, etc. The goal of this session is to discuss and learn from others’ strategic successes and failures as well as gain a better insight on the different obstacles, protection, insurance, and other resources available to these institutions.

Learning Objectives – attendees will:

  1. Hear and share examples of litigation against residency programs.
  2. Understand how other programs navigated their legal processes and learn from their successes and failures.
  3. Gain insight on resources available to protect programs, directors, residents and patient care.

GS4: Generational Differences and their Impact on Incoming Residents: Something’s Fishy

In recent years, workplaces have seen the effects of generational differences, with companies trying to figure out how to bridge this generational divide. In medicine we are not exempt from these challenges. We are seeing our traditional teaching methods being less effective our modern learners. In this session, we will discuss that although traditional methods of teaching should not be abandoned, adapting new approaches may be necessary to get the most out of our residents. We will discuss techniques to optimize newer generational learning, the balance of work life balance, and management of professionalism with this newer generation.

Learning Objectives – attendees will:

  1. Discuss differing views of work-life balance and burnout between generations.
  2. Learn about work-life balance integration. 
  3. Foster efforts in improving wellness and education in our training models.
  4. Discuss adaptations of traditional teaching methods for the newer generation.
  5. Learn techniques in how to manage professionalism in our trainees.
